Mark Samuel was born in 1956 and raised in Penarth. He trained at Cardiff College of Art and Stourbridge College of Art. Mark spent years developing his skills before having his first solo exhibition.
Mark Samuel’s paintings are concerned with what he sees around him. He takes the urban landscape as his subject matter and in particular the effect of light on that landscape. Influenced by both Sickert and Hopper, he makes us look again at buildings both beautiful and less than beautiful, often focusing on part of those buildings to reveal form bathed in light or made mysterious by shadow. Hu uses subtle palette to create strikingly atmospheric paintings, while avoiding any hint of sentimentality.
